A punched-hole shutter is what you choose when you’d pick a solid shutter — but still want to glance inside. The curtain is made of solid laths with rows of larger vision slots pressed through at intervals, keeping most of the steel intact.

The result sits deliberately between our other shutters: very close to solid-shutter strength, with enough sight-line for window checks, alarm response and a hint of display. Supplied and fitted from £2,200. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements.

How it differs from perforated

People use the names interchangeably; the shutters are not the same. A perforated curtain trades steel for visibility — thousands of small holes across every lath. A punched-hole curtain keeps the lath substantially solid and concentrates the openings into defined slots. Less view, more metal.

If your priority order is security first, visibility second, punched-hole is your shutter; if it’s the other way round, go perforated. Both beat guessing — our roller shutters guide has the full four-way comparison table.

Where punched-hole earns its keep

Convenience stores and newsagents that keep cigarettes and spirits in sight of the till. Pharmacies wanting a visual check of the dispensary without exposing it. Betting shops, vape shops and mini-markets on mixed parades — busy enough that total blankness looks unwelcoming, risky enough that a grille feels light. It’s also a practical choice where a keyholder or patrol needs to see in during a night-time alarm call without opening up: the vision slots answer “is anyone inside?” from the pavement.

Security detail

The punched lath keeps roughly the structural integrity of a solid curtain because the slots are pressed, not cut, and spaced to preserve the lath’s spine. Paired with heavy-gauge guides, a lockable bottom rail (or motor locking on electric models) and a properly fixed canopy, it resists levering and impact in the same league as solid — and comfortably above any grille. Insurers who ask for “security shutters” accept punched-hole curtains for most retail risk profiles; if your policy names a specific standard, tell us and we’ll spec to it in writing.

Specification

Galvanised steel curtains as standard, powder-coated to any RAL colour. Manual or electric operation — for daily trading we recommend electric with a manual override; opening a steel curtain by hand twice a day gets old by Wednesday.

CE/UKCA-marked to BS EN 13241. Made to measure in 7–10 working days, fitted in a day by our own team, mechanism demonstrated at handover.

Aftercare

Annual servicing recommended — and required in practice under PUWER if powered. If anything ever stops it dead, our 24/7 repair team covers London and the M25.

Punched-hole shutter FAQs

From £2,200 supplied and fitted for a typical single shop front. Prices may differ slightly or increase depending on exact size and design requirements. Fixed quote after a free survey.

The pressing process and lath spec add manufacturing cost — you’re paying for near-solid strength plus vision, in one curtain.

Yes. The lath stays mostly solid, so it resists cutting and levering better than a fully perforated curtain. Perforated wins on display visibility; punched-hole wins on strength.

Partially — the slots give a clear line of sight into the shop, but it won’t showcase a display the way a perforated shutter does. Think “check inside”, not “window shop”.

For most retail policies, yes — punched-hole curtains count as security shutters. If your insurer names a standard or rating, we’ll spec and confirm it in writing.

Electric for daily use — punched-hole curtains are heavy. All our electric shutters include manual override for power cuts.

An annual service: guides cleaned and lubricated, laths checked, locks and (on electric models) motor, brake and safety systems tested. Powered shutters in workplaces fall under PUWER, so servicing isn’t optional.

Around two weeks: 7–10 working days manufacture after your free survey, then one day on site.
